Body work

Body work treatments are a chance to tune in and reconnect to your body, your home.

The needs in the present guide each session. While holding the integrity of neutrality, I listen to the information your body gives me and allow it to guide the work.

These treatments are informed by Chinese Medicine and based on modalities such as massage, shiatsu, myofascial work, lymphatic drainage, clinical manual therapy, cupping & gua sha. Read more about these modalities below.

energy work

Similar to your respiratory tide, you have a deep fluid body tide that encompasses everything from the spinal fluid to the fluid membrane of every cell in your body. When engaging in active deep listening with this tide, one may find their way back to their original blueprint.

This practice is rooted in a lineage of biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST). Craniosacral therapy is a subtle bodywork form that downregulates the nervous system, reduces stress, and improves organ function.

This practice may be supplemented by breathwork, visualization, and sound therapy.

Please note that body work is inherently intertwined with energy work. They are distinguished as two different services to reflect patients’ expectations while booking. Body work is a more physically active treatment while energy work is experienced as a more receptive and physically passive treatment. We can always adjust the type of treatment day-of within the appointment timeframe to reflect your needs in the moment.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

“Craniosacral therapy is a dance, a dance between the contraction of membrane and the expansion of fluid. It is our birthright, that place where life as mystery first emerges and then expands to fill this structure that we call a body.”
- Susan Raffo

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle, holistic form of bodywork that promotes healing and wellness by harnessing the body's innate capabilities. Rooted in osteopathy, this therapy focuses on the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes and fluid that surround, protect, and nourish the brain and spinal cord. Practitioners of BCST use subtle, non-invasive touch to engage with the rhythms and flows of this system, supporting the body’s natural processes of repair and balance. Craniosacral therapy is practiced while fully clothed and is beneficial at every stage of life, from infancy to elder years.

INDICATIONS

Developmental and Complex Trauma: Offering a gentle approach to healing that respects the body's pacing and boundaries.
Physical Traumas: BCST is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from a variety of physical traumas, including:

  • Birth traumas and early childhood injuries, which can have lasting effects on physical and emotional health.

  • Car accidents, supporting recovery from whiplash and other soft tissue injuries.

  • Concussions and other traumatic brain injuries, aiding in the alleviation of post-concussion symptoms.

  • Pelvic floor dysfunctions, including postpartum recovery and chronic pelvic pain.

  • Dental traumas and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ), addressing the cranial impacts of dental work and jaw issues.

  • Surgical recoveries, helping to ease post-surgical pain and facilitate healing.

Chronic Pain and Conditions: BCST is effective in managing and providing relief for a variety of chronic conditions, including:

  • Migraines and chronic headaches, offering a reduction in frequency and intensity.

  • Chronic neck and back pain, addressing underlying tensions and misalignments.

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, by promoting relaxation and energy flow.

  • Respiratory conditions such as asthma, enhancing breathing capacity and relaxation.

  • Digestive disorders or IBS, by supporting gut health and relieving discomfort.

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), promoting hormonal balance, reducing stress, and alleviating mood-related symptoms

Stress-Related Disorders: BCST is effective in managing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and insomnia, promoting a state of relaxation and well-being.

BCST LINEAGE

My teachers are David and Misha Sol, taught by Charles Ridley who established a style of post-biodynamic craniosacral therapy distinguished from traditional BCST. Craniosacral therapy traces back to abolitionist Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy and mentee of Shawnee and Cherokee healers.

To honor this lineage and the people it originated from, anyone of Indigenous descent may book complimentary energywork treatments.

DISCLOSURE

Please note that Energy Work treatments are set at a reduced rate while I work to finish my training hours as the last step of my BCST certification.

  • Shiatsu, a therapeutic form of massage originating from Japan, intertwines physical and energetic healing. At its core, Shiatsu involves the use of fingers, thumbs, and palms to apply pressure to various points on the body, thereby promoting energy flow, or "Qi," and aiding in the relief of tension and stress. Unlike conventional massage therapies, Shiatsu can be performed with the recipient fully clothed, emphasizing comfort and ease.

Zen Shiatsu, a specific branch of this healing art, integrates traditional Shiatsu techniques with the principles of Zen Buddhism. This method focuses not only on physical alignment and balance but also on the spiritual and emotional well-being of the individual. Zen Shiatsu practitioners take a meditative approach, using intuition and empathy to connect deeply with the recipient.

The hara, or abdomen, is often used to assess which meridians would harmonize if treated. Shizuto Masunaga, a well-regarded figure in Shiatsu, founded this diagnostic tool in addition to extensions to all the traditional meridians.

Shiatsu encourages both practitioner and recipient to engage in a journey of mutual healing, embodying a philosophy where mind, body, and spirit are inseparable and must be treated as a whole for true wellness.

  • Cupping therapy is an ancient bodywork practice with a history that spans many cultures and centuries. Its origins can be traced back to several ancient civilizations, including the Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern cultures, each of which has documented the use of cupping techniques in their medical practices and healing rituals.

Cupping promotes Qi (energy) flow, removes blood stagnation, and dispels internal heat. Cupping therapy enhances circulation, eases pain, and draws out toxins from the body's tissues by creating suction on the skin. This technique is particularly effective for deep muscular tension and encourages a state of deep relaxation and well-being.

Gua Sha involves the therapeutic scraping of the skin with a smooth-edged tool to improve Qi circulation. This practice not only reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system but also helps to break down stagnation, promoting the healing of chronic pain and improving overall health. Gua Sha is valued for its efficacy in treating conditions like tension headaches, fever, and fatigue by stimulating the body's natural healing processes.

  • Lymphatic massage is a gentle and therapeutic technique designed to support your body's natural lymphatic system. A blend of delicate movements are used including gliding, compressing, stretching, and the application of traditional wooden tools to softly stimulate lymph flow throughout the body as well as body brushes. Unlike vigorous body sculpting or weight loss massages, this treatment focuses on enhancing your overall well-being by encouraging relaxation and balance.

This calming treatment is ideal for boosting the immune system, elevating energy levels, refining skin texture, and diminishing fluid retention and inflammation. It's a natural detoxifier, aiding your body in returning to a state of harmony and vitality. Lymphatic massage is your pathway to feeling rejuvenated and at your best, and is fantastic for liver and immune support.

    Preparing for lymphatic treatment

To maximize the benefits of your lymphatic treatment, we advise you to stay well-hydrated before and after your session and to consume a light meal beforehand. For your safety and the effectiveness of the massage, please avoid botox, laser, or wax treatments within 24 hours of your appointment.

For postpartum patients: a rest period of 3 weeks following vaginal childbirth or 5 weeks post C-section is recommended before receiving lymphatic massage. Please consider obtaining clearance from your physician.

  • *Offered at Community Sliding Scale prices or booked as a traditional Body Work treatment

Grief is a challenging emotion to move through. It can amplify feelings of loneliness, sadness, anxiety, guilt, and anger, amongst many other physical, emotional, and mental reactions. Our bodies express grief in these ways as a protective response to the overwhelm of loss.

Grief knows not of proximity but of impact. Your experience can be a personal loss of varying multitudes or feeling the weight of global grief. Reconnecting with your body and calming your nervous system allows the body to witness and soften so that you may begin to nurture your grief rather than resist it.

Your experience with grief is enough. If you are unsure if this service is suited to your needs, don't hesitate to reach out to discuss further.

These full-body treatments are aimed at relaxing the nervous system and are conducted using a gentle touch. We begin with a 15-min intake, a 10-min body scan, and 50-min of hands-on massage.
